What's this?

On these pages we, the regulars of IRCNet's #unix channel, wish to present the channel and ourselves to the users of the World Wide Web.
You will find information about the channel, about us (photo gallery, links to personal homepages) and a whole truckload of information about the fetish we all share, the UNIX* computer operating system.

There's a myth that #unix is unfriendly. That's not true. We're just a bit picky about who our friends are. If you enter the channel for the first time, please be kind to us. Don't SHOUT, don't ask questions that are covered by the manpages, be so polite as to respect the netiquette and if the channel is silent and nobody answers (or talks at all, which happens quite often) that's not a sign that we're arrogant jerks but we probably have some work to do. Most of us work with or for the network, we're not just here for fun.

In addition, some other channels might be a better place if you want to chat about certain topics or seek help. In general, these are:

If you want to know how to install an IRC robot or ircII script, please talk with your system administrator, (s)he might even help you. We won't help anybody with bots. Bots are not tolerated on #unix.

Now that you probably decided to visit #unix, we recommend reading the Frequently Asked Questions list, which provides answers to the background noise on #unix and useful information about IRC, #unix, the UNIX OS family and these pages as well.

Stuff

Please remember that our IRC channel is not an online helpdesk. When you have questions about UNIX, read the manual pages, ask your system administrator and make use of this UNIX help repository. That's why we created it. Thanks.
